MSA Security, an Allied Universal® Company, is hiring a Explosive Detection Canine (EDC) Imprinter. The Explosive Detection Canine Imprinter will report to the Director of Canine Training, and primarily work in the Windsor, Connecticut training facility. The EDC Imprinter will be responsible for the imprinting and operational training of green dogs and those mature canines that are old enough to have their motivational drives assessed but require experience in work training in order to achieve the status of explosive detection canines. This individual will be responsible for helping reduce the risk of canine explosive detection performance failure and the ultimate risk to our client’s customers by saving lives. The EDC Imprinter will make determinations if a canine is unable to achieve the desired status of working dog for whatever reason.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage the administrative tasks associated with the canine class coordination and communicating canine development progress to the instructor team
Teach canines explosive odor recognition capabilities, primary alert, and basic training exercises
Develop and implement new training programs based on knowledge and study of new and improved techniques; identify remedial training needs and develop new programs to address needs
Utilize techniques that may be considered “cutting-edge” on certain canines to identify which methods are successful and those that may need to be refined; introduce certain new approaches to whole program once developed and tested
Manage/imprint up to 6-8 canines at a time
Establish relationships with canines to assess their strengths and weaknesses, and to observe and recognize different behaviors
Expose canines to different levels of odor recognition training, and eventually determine readiness for the partnership in the field working with EDC Handlers
Track progress of each canine individually as they progress through different stages of the imprinting process
Identify canines who can progress through imprinting more quickly (fast-track), and look for ways to challenge the canines to achieve progress at an expedited manner
Remain fluent on new training techniques; challenge existing ideas; be open to ground-breaking approaches as science changes
Assess potential canines from breeders to determine which ones may fit well for MSA clients- healthy strong drive, good demeanor, social, etc. Determine which ones should be kept and which one will be returned to the breeder
Work closely with the trainers and instructors to ensure the overall process from the imprintation to matching with a handler, to training handler, to coaching on techniques, is all to optimized and achieving the best possible outcomes
Regularly participate in maintaining training facility, ensuring explosive materials are being stored and secure properly organizing training materials, and ensuring cleanliness of facility
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess, or be able to obtain a New York State Security License
Must possess, or be able to obtain, a Transportation Workers Identification Card (TWIC)
Successful completion of a basic canine training course
Must possess one or more of the following
Minimum of four (4) years of military service, preferably in a combat deployment or other tactically operating capacity
Minimum of four (4) years in a law enforcement role and completed an accredited Law Enforcement Academy (Municipal/State/Federal)
Minimum of four (4) years as a municipal or federal correctional officer and attended a full-time accredited LE/Corrections Academy (must have enforcement responsibilities)
Prior work experience training working canines
Minimum of two (2) years of experience working scent detection dogs in either explosives, narcotics, or accelerant
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel)
Self-motivated, strong work ethic, and willingness to work independently
Basic knowledge of classical and operant conditioning techniques
Ability to collaborate with the trainers and instructors to ensure the overall process for students is positive and achieving desired results.
